Researcher Internship

TextileLab Amsterdam is a creative research lab for innovation in textiles, materials and fashion through heritage, craftsmanship, technology, digital fabrication and biology. We believe in collaboration, transparency, process, collective intelligence and knowledge sharing, in order to push the boundaries of the textile and clothing industry.

Are you curious about innovation in materials and textiles? Do you like to research about where color and materials come from? Are you meticulous and organised in documenting and performing experiments? Do you enjoy reproducing processes and capturing them?

We are looking for a new intern positions to support the research and implementation of the projects at TextileLab. While you research with us, we will make sure to provide you with tools, machines and knowledge support to develop your own creative side project(s). Your role is to assist in the execution of experiments and carefully document outcomes.

At Waag, we research sustainable forms and value-chains around bio-based-compostable colors - from pigments to dyes, from plant to bacterial and further.  We believe in working in sync with nature, but also fostering connections and uncovering the local ecosystems that build up a strong community of practice.

What are you going to do?

●      You will take care of long term experiments, recording information and documenting along the way

●      You will contribute in the mapping of the textile, materials & color systems

●       You will execute experiments on biomaterials, biochromes

●      You will develop workshops, ideate how tos and ways of reaching others

●      You will take care of the dye garden once a week and harvest the dye matter

●      You will archive experiments in our Open Source Material Archive and assist in maintaining it

●      You will spend one day a week on your own project (applying with a concept is a plus) and share the process and outcomes through open-source documentation

●      You will provide assistance with daily lab maintenance and preparation, to keep the lab clean and cosy by the end of each day

●      You will work closely with the TextileLab team and other interns working at Waag.

●      Contribute to a fun, safe, collaborative and pleasant work environment;

What do we offer:

We will share with you our knowledge on sustainable materials, ink and dye making, use of labs and tools. Additionally, we will guide you through our research methods and ongoing experimentations. You will have access to the TextileLab, Open WetLab and FabLab during working hours and mentors throughout your internship. You will be able to develop your own side project and craft prototypes.

Your profile:

●    Loves learning, researching, documenting through photography and videos

●    Is able to create clear instruction communications material with Illustrator and Photoshop

●    Have experience with either growing plants, natural colour, dyeing or printing textiles;

●    Understands how to document experiments very precisely

●    A scientific background in biology or chemistry is a pre.

●    Interested or experienced in comparing tests and experiments

●    Able to work independently in a dynamic and creative environment;

●    Prediliges team-work with peers;

●    Proactively connects and engages with new people;

Internship at Waag Future Lab

An internship where you can learn a lot in a short time and where you can work in a young, dynamic and flexible work environment. You have a lot of responsibility and there is plenty of room for your own initiative and creativity. The fee for this internship is € 350,- per month on the basis of 40 hours per week. Both positions are intended for a six month period internship. It is expected you will be a member of the team for a minimum of 32 hours per week.
